In Memoriam: Leon Hyman

On December 31, 2022, Shearith Israel’s choirmaster emeritus, Leon Hyman, passed away.  He was the longest serving employee in the history of Shearith Israel, having been hired in 1955 until his retirement in 2021, an incredible and unsurpassed span of 66 years. 

Over his long career Leon recorded much of our music. The last recording, made in 2022, entitled Leon Hyman: Sabbath Settings, is a collection of Leon’s own compositions and in which Leon talks about his life and career at Shearith Israel.
