Junior Congregation at Congregation Shearith Israel

Full Junior Congregation services began in October and will continue throughout the year. Our leaders are motivated and committed in their leadership and this year we are introducing a more personalized development
of the children’s skills in tefillah. Each child has a card with the parts on it and as they learn a new part, they fill the card with markers. Every participant who learns five new parts by the end of January will be invited to an ice cream party. We are also looking to record a companion CD to Junior Congregation with kids singing the parts, to accompany the CD which Rabbi Ira Rohde has
recorded. Participants who learn the parts really adeptly will be invited to record them.
We are looking for greater parental organizational involvement in Junior
Congregation, please tell our Assistant Congregational Leader Lynn Kaye
(lynn.kaye@shearithisrael.org) or Dr. Victoria Bengualid if you can take more active leadership.
November and December Junior Congregation dates are: Nov. 22, Dec. 6 and Dec. 20.

(Ed note: The Board of Trustees has changed Ms. Kaye’s title to Assistant Congregational Leader because it fits better the diverse responsibilities she performs in the community.)

Please meet in the Small synagogue at 10.15 for Junior Congregation except on Rosh Hashana when we will meet in Levy auditorium.  Dates are on Shabbat unless otherwise noted.

Shabbat Morning Youth Groups

On the weeks when there is no Junior Congregation, there are youth activities from 10am until the end of services for kids from toddlers to bar/bat mitzva.  For the toddlers there is a “Tot Shabbat” service in addition to the regular childcare every Shabbat at about 11am.

Family Education at Congregation Shearith Israel

Our Family Educational Programming will continue to brighten Shabbat afternoons this year. Aaron Finkelstein, a rabbinical student at Yeshivat
Chovevei Torah, will teach family education classes to parents, grandparents and children on the following Shabbatot:
November 22, December 20, January 24, February 28, April 4, and May 9. The program starts about 20 minutes after Kiddush following services. First there is an informal educational activity with parents and children learning together, followed by a children’s program and an adult discussion-based
class. The program lasts an hour.
