SHEARITH ISRAEL LEAGUE
LEAGUE NOTES By George Bulow
On the weekend of August 20th - 22nd, the League has arranged for members of the Shearith Israel community to visit Newport,
Rhode Island. We will be attending Shabbat Services at
Congregation Jeshuat Israel, the historic Touro Synagogue,
as the guests of Rabbi Eskowitz and the Officers of the
Congregation. If a sufficient number of us are present and able
to do so, we have been invited to conduct Shabbat services in
our minhag.
This visit will culminate on Sunday, August 22nd with the
George Washington Letter Celebration, organized under the
auspices of the Touro Synagogue Foundation and Congregation
Jeshuat Israel. The Celebration commemorates George
Washington’s famous 1790 letter to “To the Hebrew Congregation
in Newport Rhode Island,” written during his first visit to Rhode
Island as President of the United States. All Shearith Israel
attendees will be given VIP status for seating at this Ceremony,
scheduled to take place at 1pm. Places must be reserved in
advance.
If you are interested in participating in this weekend,
please contact George Bulow at 212.580.5015. There are a
limited number of lodging establishments which can arrange for
the kosher catering of meals on Shabbat. If you are interested
in reserving these spaces, please contact us immediately. All
proposed lodging is within a short walking distance of the Touro
Synagogue.
While an automobile is the easiest and simplest way to
visit Newport, some potential attendees may wish to arrive by
using public transportation, instead. Please contact George
Bulow if you want to know about your travel options to arrive
on Friday, August 20th for the weekend’s events and for a return
on Sunday afternoon, the 22nd.
We hope that you will join us for what should prove to
be both a highly memorable and very exciting event.
[Ed. note: we congratulate Joelle Wallach, who has completed
her two-year term as President of the League. Hazakah
u-berukhah for all your contributions to our congregational life
and programming!]
