SUNDAY MORNING CLASS IN MAIMONIDES

THE MISHNEH TORAH OF MAIMONIDES

Rabbi Marc D. Angel conducts this class that studies the classis Halakhic work of Moses Maimonides. The Mishneh Torah includes basic principles in Jewish philosophy, ethics and law.

We will be studying the Mishneh Torah—the classic code of Jewish Law compiled by Moses Maimonides. The class will survey various topics in Jewish Law, and focus on their ethical underpinnings. We will examine how Maimonides, in presenting the particular laws of Judaism, fosters an appreciation of universal ethical components of the Torah tradition.
Please join us for services at 8:00 AM, followed by class 8:40-9:40AM. Bagels and coffee are served.

Sunday Mornings: Rabbi Yehuda Halevy’s Kuzari

The great medieval Spanish poet and thinker, Rabbi Yehuda Halevy, wrote a classic work of Jewish thought, the Kuzari. Presented primarily as a dialogue between the King of the Khazars and a Jewish sage, the Kuzari explores essential teachings of Judaism including the nature of God, the immortality of the soul, the Oral Torah, prayer, the problem of evil.
Sjimon Den Hollander is a rabbinical student at Yeshiva University, and an active member of our congregation. He has an M.A. in Arabic and Islam from the Rijks University of Leiden, and has taught Hebrew, Arabic, Islam and Judaism. He has been teaching a Sunday morning class at Shearith Israel for the past number of years.
The class meets on Sunday mornings, from 9:45-11:00 AM.
